Did you know the word “coach” originally had nothing to do with guiding people? It actually comes from the Hungarian word “kocsi,” referring to a horse-drawn carriage from the village of Kocs. It wasn’t until around 1830 at Oxford University that “coach” was used to describe a tutor who “carried” a student through an exam, eventually evolving into the meaning we know today – someone who helps transport you from where you are to where you want to be. The modern coaching profession, as we recognize it, largely originated in the USA in the 1980s, influenced by the successes seen in sports coaching and the growing need for performance optimization in the business world.
