Who owns the schedule now

In the past month of interviews, I’m seeing ‘project coordinator’ postings expect full schedule control and resource loading without real authority to negotiate scope or fees. On my last 32‑week civic renovation in Seattle, I ran the MS Project critical path and aligned consultant milestones to permitting windows, but it only held with principal-level backing — are firms shifting schedule ownership away from PMs, or is this just a title/comp shell game?

Same boat on a hospital TI: the schedule finally stuck after I added a 2‑week look‑ahead with a “decision due” column and sent it to principals every Friday — once their names were on it, consultants moved… If you’re stuck with “no authority to negotiate,” tie key milestones to invoice approvals so you gain de facto leverage. It’s herding cats with a Gantt chart, but the cat likes treats.
