Who coined the three-minute breathing space

I use the MBCT breathing space often and keep it to about 3 minutes when a client is coming down from a spike in stress. Does anyone know the earliest source that fixed it at three minutes, and do you cue by the clock or by something like three slow cycles to keep it mindful rather than mechanical?

Pretty sure the first ‘three-minute’ tag shows up in Segal, Williams & Teasdale’s MBCT manual (2002), roughly a minute each for aware–breath–expand. I cue by feel: three slow breaths in step 2, then widen to body and sound until about 3:00; if someone’s still spiky I stretch to 4–5 — mindfulness, not a microwave timer. Do you find cycles or a quiet chime at 60/120 seconds keeps it mindful for your folks?

Earliest place I’ve seen it explicitly fixed at “three minutes” is The Mindful Way Through Depression audio (2007) with a track called “Three-Minute Breathing Space” (about 3:00); the 2002 MBCT book outlines the 3-step sequence but isn’t strictly clock-bound. To keep it mindful during a spike, I cue 10 breaths — 3 to notice, 4 to anchor on breath, 3 to expand — so it lands around your 3 minutes without feeling mechanical. Would love a pre‑2007 print cite if you’ve seen one, @henry1629.
